If you’re looking for a cleaner, longer-lasting fire with less smoke, it’s time to try the upside-down fire method. Instead of lighting your fire from the bottom, this technique starts at the top, allowing the fire to burn down through the layers of wood.
The result is improved efficiency, reduced smoke, and a better overall fireplace experience.
How to Build an Upside-Down Fire
Step 1 – Place the Largest Logs
Start by placing the largest logs side by side at the bottom of the firebox. Position them as closely together as possible to prevent coals from falling through. A tightly packed base creates a stable foundation and helps your fire burn longer.
Step 2 – Add Medium Logs
Place a layer of medium-sized logs on top of the larger logs. These will ignite once the larger logs have heated up and provide a steady transition as the fire burns downward.
Step 3 – Add Kindling
Add a generous layer of kindling and the smallest pieces of dry wood on top of the stack. This is the layer that will catch fire first, making it easy to get your fire started.
Step 4 – Light the Fire
Place one or two firelighters within the kindling and light them. As the kindling burns, it creates hot embers that gradually ignite each layer below in a controlled, top-down burn.
Why It Works
As the larger logs heat up, they release combustible gases known as volatiles. With the upside-down method, these gases rise through the flames above and burn before they can escape up the chimney. This creates a hotter, cleaner fire with less smoke and greater efficiency.
Traditional bottom-up fires often allow these gases to escape unburned, leading to increased smoke, wasted fuel, and creosote build-up inside the flue. Over time, creosote can reduce your fireplace’s performance and increase the need for chimney maintenance.
The upside-down fire method offers several benefits:
- Cleaner combustion with less smoke.
- Improved heating efficiency.
- Reduced creosote build-up in the chimney.
- A longer-lasting, more consistent burn.
- A strong bed of hot coals that makes it easy to add more wood as needed.
